A Fine Line by Sinclair

What makes a work of art famous? Is it the technical mastery an artist exhibits? Is it the amount of money it sells for? Perhaps it’s the opinions of the bourgeoisie... or a lucky connection to a well respected art critic. Or maybe it’s deeper than that.

It’s interesting that most famous artists (and artworks) were first hated before they were loved. Take for example Vincent van Gogh... he only sold one painting in his entire life, and his now considered masterpiece, The Starry Night was first thought of as a failure by Van Gogh himself. Now, it’s one of the most famous artworks of all time. So famous that I feel like I’ve always known The Starry Night... it feels ingrained into our culture.

We are all connected to The Starry Night.

In “A Fine Line” I use my one line animations to capture the energy of three famous artists and bring to life three famous artworks: the “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci, “The Old Guitarist” by Pablo Picasso, and “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh. We are all connected to these works - each of us in our own unique way.

“A Fine Line” was made to explore the connections we have to these famous artworks and question: what makes a work of art famous?

About the Artist

Sinclair is a self-taught abstract artist based in Chicago, IL. His artistic journey began when he started drawing people with one line to express the idea that we are all connected. His style has evolved since then, but he is still inspired by the many ways in which people are connected to each other. His goal is to express what connects us: the emotions and experiences we all share, in a form that we can all relate to. This goal is at the foundation of his work.
