I stared in awe at the puffins all around me on this windswept island in the Firth of Forth in Scotland. The Isle of May is the home of over 200,000 birds during nesting season!
I had been relentlessly curious, learning all I could about puffins, their habitats and their challenges. Like many wild birds, they face difficulties caused by a changing climate, relentless fishing and avian influenza. When I got to this little fellow, I was struck that he seemed to be looking at me with as much curiosity as I had for him. It gave me pause. How does the world look from the point of view of a puffin? How was this cutie processing the two-legged visitors to his ancestral home? What would these birds tell me if we spoke the same language?
Curiosity is a reminder to be open to the messages from the wild world around us, and to remember that the more we know, the more we realize how interconnected we all are.
