A Note From the Artist

I have always wanted to try my hand at physical expression again. However, this was not a return to the past, but rather a challenge to see what kinds of things I could create after going digital. I did not want to choose one or the other, but rather to flexibly choose the means according to the expression.

The title "Painting Over" is a phrase that expresses the part of the work that I felt most strongly about the difference between digital and physical works. Of course, with digital, we can "save" and "redo" our work. However, with a physical work of art, this is not possible. Even if we wipe off the paint immediately, there will be traces of it. In this sense, I feel that the act of wiping off the paint itself is also painting over it. These common sense ideas are new to me, as I have become completely accustomed to creating digitally, and I was reminded of them all over again.

This release is an attempt to sell physical works through NFT certificates. It is also an attempt to sell the same series of works via both Tokyo and NYC based platforms. An NFC tag is attached to the back of the work, which is physically connected to the certificate. An IRL exhibition of about 20 pieces, including these works, is currently being held at Gallery NEORT++ in Tokyo. The exhibition website can be found here.

I believe that it means a lot to the physical artists to be able to sell works from anywhere in the world, whereas in the past they could only be purchased at the venue. Of course, similar attempts have been made in the past, but I believe they were limited to certain artists. I believe that if this approach becomes more common, many physical artists will be more liberated from the concept of location. I think that making the certificate NFT, where a wallet is required to own the work (resulting in a closer integration of the physical art world and the digital world), and the entire history of the work is inscribed in the blockchain, can help achieve this vision.

The artworks will be shipped to the certificate holders in phases after the exhibition ends on Feb 4(JST). Please cooperate in providing a shipping address.
