The year is 2051 and humanity is gently nestled in the arms of the metaverse. Numerous worlds and environments have been coded as an escape from the realities and hardships of biological existence. In the Space Yacht metaverse, Monument Meme Park honors the memes of yesteryear. Like the Great Pyramids or Mount Rushmore, Monument Meme Park tells the story of a not-so-distant past when blockchain technology was in its infancy and humans were pre-metaverse, or as we like to call them “pre-metas.” These monuments give us an insight into the psyche of the pre-metas living in the 2020s.
“GM” first became a popular salutation on the Internet as an abbreviation for “good morning.” Once adopted by the crypto meme Illuminati, it came to mean that today would be better than yesterday, that tomorrow we’d all be rich, and if you like NFTs, you’re alright with me!
For those glass half full/half empty people, the abbreviations “WAGMI” and “NGMI” represented two very distinct epistemological viewpoints. “WAGMI” (We’re All Gonna Make It) gave a sense of hope -- a slogan that could lift you up and remind you that no matter how fucked the situation, the blockchain will be our salvation. “NGMI” (Not Gonna Make It) expresses the fear of missing out on profits and the existential dread of living. Walking the fine line between rich and poor became a lifestyle of itself and “NGMI” was its slogan.
Other themes specific to the monuments include the romance of space travel and the galaxy we live in. Like the Greeks before them, the pre-metas of the 2020s worshiped the moon, which became a symbol of good fortune and wealth. And how do you get to the moon without a rocket?! Rockets have long symbolized curiosity, exploration, and the conquering of a new frontier filled with dogs, money, and dog money.
The meme monuments in the collection document the history of the pre-metas, when hopium was in the air and all-time highs were just around the corner.
Drawings will be open for 30 minutes
