About Lapidarist

A collaborative on-going series of work that has also gone by other names like Solitaire by British artists Shantell Martin and Ben Sheppee, Lapidarist is about deconstructing solid or valid entities and re-presenting them in a transformed manner. The three-dimensional nature of the now abstract structures, each of which floats aimlessly in space, contributes to their ambiguity as something imagined attempts to become something real.

With a collaborative working relationship that spans 15 years, artists Martin and Sheppee have styles that both contrast and complement each other's practice, style, and work.

(lapidarist, Latin: lapidarius) is an artist or artisan who forms stone, minerals, or gemstones into decorative items such as cabochons, engraved gems (including cameos), and faceted designs.
