Evocations in Red by Katerine Escobar

Released May 16, 2022

Presented by The Mad Pups

This collection is a representation of the girl who plays, the girl who learns and the girl who prays. It is a vision of the woman who loves, the woman who suffers and the woman who fights. She wanders restlessly, searching for her place, for answers, in a world torn between fantasy and reality, past and present, freedom and tradition, between the mundane and the divine. Evocations in Red is a monochromatic incarnation of small stories illustrated in images loaded with symbolism and endless meaning that allow for disparate interpretations.

Katerine Escobar is a Colombian digital artist originally from Medellin, who studied fine arts at Colombian National University. All of her digital work is created on an iPad, using illustration software that has an extensive number of graphite pencil options. These digital pencils offer super realistic, meticulous strokes. The result of this approach is a natively digital work that has the appearance of a realistic drawing, with a hyper realistic finish.

In her work, she collects elements and symbols that reveal phenomena such as religion, politics and education. With these elements, she tries to generate contrast or duality, comparing or confronting the natural and the artificial, the sublime and the abominable, the past and the present. Much of her work, including the vivid red color often prominently featured, represents manifestations of her life experience growing up in Colombia.
