Spirit VS Machine by Defer

Defer is renowned for his unique style of calligraphic/abstract paintings. He is well known for expertly rendering beautifully complex letter forms. In the past 10 years Defer’s work has been transcending into the realm of fine art. His recent works have evolved into the obliteration of the structured letter form into what he refers to as “spiritual language” - an automatic and spontaneous volley of brush strokes - conveying messages from the subconscious. His works on canvas have been displayed at various museums and galleries including the LA Louver, The Getty Research Institute, LACMA, Pasadena Museum of California Art, OTIS College of Designs’s Ben Maltz Gallery. His work has been featured in numerous publications including Art In America, The Los Angeles Times, Dwell Magazine. Recently his work was included in the “Liber Amicorum” project which is archived in the Getty Research Institute’s special collection. His work was on display at the Beyond The Streets Exhibition in Brooklyn NY. He has also painted in various locations throughout the world including France, The U.K. Japan. Defer’s influence on the visual language found not only in the City of Angels but around the world cannot be overlooked.
