Yugen (2018) is a digital, generative, moving-image artwork which uses coding technologies to enable a continuous, non-predictable, self-selective visual display. The narrative control is therefore relinquished to the computer engine which powers the work. One might even say that the work is 'alive'. Each viewing encounter is therefore spontaneous and unique and offers an almost meditative experience.
The original work features the actor Salma Hayek Pinault as the lead protagonist in this non-linear narrative display which fuses art, digital technologies and film practice to form radical new possibilities of creative expression.
The rich visual language is resonant of a language of dreaming - of out-of-body experiences or of plant-medicine journeying. It offers a meditative, other-worldly exploration into perceptions of reality and consciousness. The experience is further amplified by a hypnotic music and sound score written and produced by composer Magnus Fiennes.
Yugen premiered at the 75th Venice Film Festival and was screened at its first public art fair during Art Dubai in March 2022 to mark the launch of the fair's digital section.
The collection comprises a small number of pre-rendered assets - derivations from the main Yugen work and includes a small number of stills.
This is the first time Yugen, in any form, has been available as NFTs.
